ACCC 34M-25W – Kisumu Lakers, Western Jaguars book Africa Cup for Club Champions finals
Lakers Hockey Club and Western Jaguars are in the 2023 Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) finals. Lakers from Kisumu will face off against defending champions Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the finals set for Sunday from 2pm East African Time while Jaguars renew rivalry with Sharkia from Egypt in the finals as curtains come down in Blantyre, Malawi. Lakers booked a spot in the women’s finals after seeing off Delta Queens from Nigeria 2-0 to finish second in the round-robin tournament as preliminary matches ended on Saturday. Reigning KHU Premier League MVP Aurelia Opondo gave Lakers the lead in the 10th minute of the first quarter before Pauline Ochieng sealed the win for the Kisumu-based outfit in the 38th minute. The win saw Lakers solidify their second spot with 14 points, two points behind leader and defending champions GRA. GRA thrashed Scorpions from Malawi 15-0 to finish top and they will now renew their rivalry with Lakers in today’s finals. On Tuesday, Lakers drew 2-2 with GRA during the preliminary matches, a draw they must now turn to win if they are to win their maiden African hockey title. Kenya’s other representatives Blazers Hockey Club settled for third in the standings despite hammering Capital Braves 12-0. Blazer will play Delta Queens in the third place playoffs in what will be a reapeat of their Thursday’s 0-0 draw. In the men’s category, Western Jaguars came from 2-0 down at half time to force a 2-2 draw with defending champions Sharkia. Captain Mesakan Hossam gave the Egyptians a second minute lead before Ali Hamada converted a penalty corner in the 22nd minute for a 2-0 half time lead. However, Jaguars pulled a goal back through Edison Ndombi in the 39th minute before Emannuel Wiswa secured Jaguar’s the crucial point that took them to the finals. ACCC 34M-25W – Lakers and Western Jaguars carry Kenya’s gold medal hopes in Malawi
Lakers Hockey Club and Western Jaguars carry Kenya’s golden hopes as they chase final slots at the 2023 Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) in Malawi. After a week of intense matches in the sand-based National Hockey Stadium in Blantyre, Malawi, the men’s and women’s preliminary matches are set to end on Saturday with the top two teams in each category set to face off in the finals on Sunday. Played in a round-robin format, the third and fourth placed teams will fight for bronze in the classification matches. Lakers Hockey Club are currently second in the standing of the women’s category with 11 points after three wins and two draws. The Kisumu City-based outfit have so far scored 39 goals in the five matches whilst conceding only three goals, the fewest in the tournament. Lakers began the tourney with a 12-0 win over Scorpions before drawing 0-0 with Blazers on Sunday. A whopping 15-0 win over Capital Braves from Malawi followed on Monday before their 2-2 draw with GRA. This was followed by a 10-1 win over Capital Braves, a win that not only maintained their unbeaten run but also solidified their finals spot chase. Today, Lakers will face off with Delta Queens of Nigeria in what will be a rematch of the 2022 edition played earlier this year. In February, the match concluded with a goalless draw against Delta Queens, leaving Lakers tied for third place with the Nigerian side, separated only by a cruel goal difference. Lakers need to avoid defeat to sail through to the finals. A draw of any sort will see them face off against defending champions Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) who have already booked a spot with a game to spare. GRA are top with 13 points followed by Lakers with 11 points. Delta Queens are third with 10 points. Blazers, Kenya’s other club were knocked out of the finals contention after their 0-0 draw with Delta on Thursday. With eight points, the best points they can amass is 11 points if they win their last match against Capital Braves. Points that won’t be enough to secure second spot. In the men’s category, Western Jaguars who are second with 13 points will hope to pick a point against leaders and defending champions Sharkia when they play today in the final preliminary match. Sharkia are already through to the finals after five wins in a row while Jaguars will be wary of third placed Genetrix from Malawi who have 10 points. Defeat to Sharkia will mean Jaguars have to bank on goal difference to separate them. Jaguars have 27 goals while Genetrix 17 goals, a deficit of 10 goals. ACCC 34M-25W – Karanja issues Blazers rallying call ahead of Ghana Revenue Authority test
Blazers Hockey Club are confident of toppling nemesis Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) ahead of their Wednesday clash as the 2023 Africa Cup for Club Champions Tournament (ACCC) enters its penultimate stage in Blantyre, Malawi. After three matches, both Blazers and GRA found themselves tied on seven points with three matches left in the seven-team round-robin tournament. Blazers who have scored 27 goals in three matches are currently unbeaten and captain Tracy Karanja said they are going to put in more effort to ensure they maintain their unbeaten streak. Speaking via a phone interview from Blantyre, Karanja said they are confident they can topple GRA despite struggling against the Ghanaian side when they last met in Nairobi last February. “One of our goals when we landed in Malawi was to win the tournament and so far we are on track. A win today over GRA whom we know are a very good side will give us the upper hand,” said Karanja who thanked the Ministry of Sports for sponsoring them in Malawi. “Historically, we have played many times and we have won and they have won some matches but that is not our focus. We are taking one game at a time and we know we will put our best forward.” Blazers began the tournament with a 13-1 win over Genetrix before sharing the spoils in a barren draw with Lakers Hockey Club. On Monday, they hammered Scorpions 14-0. “We wanted not to concede any goal in the tournament but we were unlucky against Genetrix. That’s hockey however. We want to win it in the end. We want not only to be on the podium alone but also with our fellow Kenyan team come Sunday,” concluded Karanja. Lakers and Western Jaguars are the other Kenyan clubs in Malawi. Lakers Hockey Club on Tuesday maintained their unbeaten run at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup for Club Champions Tournament (ACCC) after playing out to a 2-2 draw against Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in in Blantyre, Malawi. Vivian Narkuor gave GRA the lead in the fifth minute of the match as coach Osei Boagye planned more tactical set plays on the touchline. However, Lakers refused to bow down to the Ghanaians like they did last February when they lost 4-1 in Nairobi. Kenyan international Aurelia Opondo leveled the scores at 1-1 after finishing off a well-orchestrated team goal in the eighth minute. A tight second quarter match-up followed as both teams failed to score to end the match 1-1 at halftime. In the final half, Harriette Night gave Lakers a 2-1 lead after netting in the 36th minute of the third quarter, a lead that just as the first quarter would last only three minutes. This is after Narkuor bagged her brace and GRA’s second to tie the scores at 2-2. Another barren fourth quarter saw Lakers pick a vital point and maintain their unbeaten run in Malawi. After four matches, Lakers lead the standings with eight points followed by Blazers and GRA both with seven points ahead of their match-up today. Lakers started the tournament with a 12-0 win over Scorpions before drawing 0-0 with Blazers on Sunday. A whopping 15-0 win over Capital Braves from Malawi followed on Monday before their draw with GRA. Lakers will rest today. Meanwhile, Western Jaguars will be seeking to bounce back to winning ways after their 0-0 draw with hosts Genetrix Hockey Club. Malawi teams endured a bad start to the Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) at the National Hockey Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday. On the opening day, four local sides lost to foreign sides, with Genetrix Men beating fellow Malawian side Parachute Battalion 8-1. On the opening day, Kenya’s Western Jaguars beat Malawi’s Scorpions Men 9-0. In the ladies’ division, Delta Queens of Nigeria beat Malawi’s Capital Braves Ladies 17-0 whereas Genetrix Women lost 13-1 to Blazers of Kenya. In another match, Scorpions Women lost 0-12 to Kenya’s Lakers. Speaking on behalf of the local sides, Scorpions Coach Alex Mpasa said they would learn from their international counterparts. “Such things happen. We are not very worried with the defeats because this is the first time we are playing in an international competition. This event has given us a platform on which to gain international experience. “Nevertheless, we can pull surprises or better results in our next fixtures,” Mpasa said. Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) President Wanthaza Mughogho said the competition has attracted top sides from the continent. “The results are normal in hockey and we look forward to upcoming games,” Mughogho said. He said it is a dream come true for Malawi to host the tournament. “The day is finally here. We have waited for this day [of hosting an international tournament] for too long,” Mughogho said Meanwhile, 17 men’s and women’s teams from six countries are taking part in the tournament, which winds up on November 26. This follows the withdrawal of Police Machines of Nigeria. In a letter to Africa Hockey Federation (AfHF) and Ham, Nigeria Hockey Federation General Secretary Chinedu Usuoha said that they have withdrawn after being recalled to duty. “We write to inform you that Police Machines are officially withdrawing from the championship in Malawi. This is due to their recall to duty by the government following the nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, which has now resulted in their inability to obtain funds for the trip despite earlier assurances,” Usuoha indicates in the letter. ACCC 34M-25W – Local rivals Lakers and Blazers draw blanks as Africa Club Champions enters day two
Lakers Hockey Club were held to a 0-0 draw by Blazers Hockey Club on Sunday evening as the 2023 Africa Cup for Club Champions Tournament (ACCC) entered day two in Blantyre, Malawi. The Kisumu based hockey team begun the 10-day tournament being played at the National Hockey Stadium with a statement 12-0 win over Malawi’s Scorpions. Gilly Okumu and Lynn Tamunai scored four goals each as captain Alice Owiti netted a brace. Aurelia Opondo and Yvette Kanyandong sealed the win. However, against Blazers, Lakers being led by Owiti could not sound the bar in the four quarters as they drew for the second consecutive time in the continental event. In February, Lakers drew 1-1 against Blazers when they debuted at the delayed 2022 event. Laker’s only win against Blazers came in May when they stunned the record Kenyan champions 1-0 at Kisumu Day High School in the Kenya Hockey Union Premier League match. The draw leaves both teams tied on four points after two matches. Blazers thrashed thrashed Genetrix Hockey Club from Malawi 13-1 on Saturday during their opening match. Kenyan internationals Eleanor Chebet and Maureen Okumu each scored a hat trick to lead the former champions to victory. Lilian Aura added a brace as Purity Odinga, Teresa Juma, Joan Anjao, Audrey Omaido and Barbra Simiyu also joined in the goal fest. Margret Munthali netted Genetrix’s consolation goal.
