22 June 2022 Lausanne, Switzerland: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has appointed South Africa as the host country for the inaugural FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup. The event will take place at the North-West University of Potchefstroom – which successfully hosted the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup in April this year – from 28 November to 4 December 2022. The aim of this new yearly event is to offer a top-level competition to the best-ranked teams not participating in the FIH Hockey Pro League and give the winning team the option to be promoted to the FIH Hockey Pro League the next season, precisely. Therefore, the FIH Hockey Nations Cup marks the start of the promotion-relegation principle for the FIH Hockey Pro League, with the winning team of the first FIH Hockey Nations Cup having the chance to be promoted to the 2023-24 FIH Hockey Pro League (provided they meet the necessary requirements for it). The following eight teams – which include some of the powerhouses of world hockey! – will participate in the very first edition, having qualified based on their position in the FIH World Rankings of May 2021: South Africa, France, Canada, Japan, Korea, Ireland, Pakistan and Malaysia. FIH CEO Thierry Weil said: “On behalf of FIH, I’d like to thank wholeheartedly the South African Hockey Association for hosting this inaugural edition of the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup. Everyone could see how successful the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup – the first FIH World Cup to be staged on African soil – was, and we’re delighted to go back to Potchefstroom soon! With the Nations Cup, not only a true hockey festival awaits all hockey fans, but there’s a lot a stake for the teams, including a place within the FIH Hockey Pro League!” Shaune Baaitjies, Acting CEO of SA Hockey: “South Africa showed our capacity as a world class host with the hosting of the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup in Potchefstroom earlier this year. The North West University facilities were outstanding and received wonderful reviews from all involved. We are delighted that the FIH has chosen to host the FIH Hockey Nations Cup in Potchefstroom. The South African Men enjoyed playing the home series of games in the FIH Hockey Pro League at the venue and look forward to adding more remarkable memories for the international hockey family. It promises to be a wonderful tournament at a wonderful venue!” The inaugural FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup will be held in Valencia, Spain, from 11 to 17 December this year. The South African women’s hockey team had already qualified for the semi-finals having scored 9 unanswered goals in the tournament, but they were looking to step up their cutting edge in front of goal in todays final Pool A match against Uganda. They were also looking to celebrate Tarryn Lombard’s 50th game in style. They produced a clinical opening quarter of the game with some beautiful symmetry to the timing of their goals. They scored 4 goals, each split by three minutes to lead the opening quarter 4-0. Tarryn Lombard opened the scoring in the 6th minute to start her 50th test on a high and she was joined on the scoresheet by Tegan Fourie, Shirndre-Lee Simmons (With her first international goal) and Lilian du Plessis. Despite their ongoing domination the South Africans were disappointed that they failed to add to the scoresheet in the second quarter, although Uganda will be proud of the defensive effort, they put in to keep the score at 4-0 at the half time break They could do nothing to stop the South Africans though as Quanita Bobbs made it 5-0 before Lilian du Plessis scored her 38th career goal at African Continental Tournaments. The apt cherry on the cake though came in the final quarter when Tarryn Lombard added her 2nd, 3rd and 4th goals in an incredibly memorable game for her. Bernadette Coston got her own goal as well to take South Africa into double figures, the first to do so at this tournament. Inky Zondi, Head Coach of the SA Women: “We played very well today and nice to score some goals. Uganda plays with tremendous spirit and it’s a really great addition to the tournament to have them here. From here we focus on the semi-final tomorrow!” The South Africans next take on Kenya in the Semi-Final tomorrow 17;45 South African time, while the second semi-final will see Ghana take on Zimbabwe straight afterwards. With both South Africa and Kenya having already qualified from Pool A for the Semi-Finals following respective victories against Namibia. The two sides have played some classic matches over the years, none more than the 2-1 victory for South Africa at the 2015 Greenfields African Championships. Both teams were keen to secure top spot and the favourable draw in the Semi-Finals. For South Africa the match marked goalkeepers 50th cap for the country. Kenya started the game a little bit faster than the South Africans and won an early penalty corner. What would become a theme of the game on an inconsistent turf was the opportunity was lost. But it hardly mattered, and Kenya created another chance from the resultant play which Festus Onyango should have done better with. South Africa then created arguably the finest opportunity of the opening interchanges when a ball fell to Keenan Horne. The opportunity looked like a replica of his opportunity against Germany at the Tokyo Olympics, but it was well saved by Shidogo in the Kenyan goal. A brilliant defensive block denied Brad Sherwood his third international goal after a scintillating run by the South African co vice-captain Bili Ntuli. South Africa and Kenya were awarded a number of penalty corners, but the titanic chess match played out as a goalless first half, much like a match between two teams already qualified for the semi-finals. The second half saw South Africa take the lead, which was probably deserved on the balance of play. Keenan Horne called for a quick ball from the sideline that caught the Kenyan defenders napping and a selfless ball to Bili Ntuli left the striker a simple job of tapping in. Ntuli and Spooner, a combination that works well for Harvestehuder in Germany, worked again for the South Africans as Spooner fired in a pinpoint cross and Ntuli was on hand to steer it home to give the South Africans a 2-0 lead. With the number of penalty corners being given away, it felt like one would eventually go in for one of the teams. And to the disappointment of the South Africans, it was the Kenyans who scored it. Captain Constance Wankgura fired it past Siya Nolutshungu to set up a grandstand finish. But rather than ending in a storm the game petered out with errors more telling than moments of brilliance. As a result, South Africa will now watch the action tomorrow to find out who they take on in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, while a date with Egypt is looming for the Kenyan Men. Tim Drummond, captain of South Africa. “Its always a physical game against Kenya. They are fit and a good team. We pride ourselves on our defence we will look at the video afterwards and see the areas that we need to improve. We always want to score goals and we will see different things we can do in the Semi-Final on Saturday.’ Related posts: ACN 2022 | South Africa first side to seal semi-final berth with victory over Namibia South Africa to host inaugural Men’s Nations Cup India storm to top of Pool C; Belgium finish second and Canada third in Pool C on Day 11 of Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 Netherlands break Indian hearts at Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018

South Africa took on their Southern African counterparts Namibia on day 2 of the 2022 African Cup of Nations in Accra, Ghana. With both sides having won their opening games, a victory for the South Africans would secure a semi-final spot thanks to Zimbabwe’s victory over Uganda. South Africa started the game with good determination and looked more settled on the pitch after struggling in their opening match. Lilian du Plessis put the South Africans ahead as she continues a remarkable goal scoring record at the Continental Championship. The South Africans were made to toil for their second, which eventually came from a penalty corner which was not cleared. Stephanie Botha reacted first and with a low shot fired her first International Goal into the bottom right corner. As coach Inky Zondi was preparing his half time talk, he had to probably change a few sentences though when Tarryn Lombard added the third for South Africa, her second of the tournament and put a bit of gloss onto the scoreboard at the break. South Africa struck the first blow of the second half when Nomnikelo Veto reacted first to a loose ball and assisted Tegan Fourie, who would not miss. 4-0 to the defending champions. If the Namibians were hoping for the barrage to stop, they would be left hopeless as Lombard popped up with a clinical display that gave the Namibians no chance. It was Nomnikelo Veto who made it six of the best when she finished after Robyn Johnson’s shot was saved from close quarters. Although South Africa were still able to win several penalty corners in the last few minutes of the game they were unable to convert any further opportunities and ultimately the match finished 6-0 to the South Africans. As a result of the victory, coupled with Zimbabwe’s win, South Africa are now guaranteed of a place in the semi-finals and their quest to qualify for the FIH Hockey World Cup continues. The team will still have to finish the group stage when they take on Uganda on Thursday at 19:00 South African Time. Phumelela Mbande, captain of the South African team, shared her thoughts on the match. “We were a lot more intentional and ruthless today. We try to improve game on game and our execution was far better. We will continue to learn as we progress through the tournament and look to deliver on our potential!” AFCON 2022 – Day 2 Results Women Pool A South Africa 13-0 Namibia Zimbabwe 5-0 Uganda Pool B Nigeria 2-1 Zambia Kenya 0-5 Ghana (Kenya Forfeit the game) Source: SAHockey.co.za Related posts: ACN 2022 | South Africa seal top spot of Pool A in Kenya victory South Africa to host inaugural Men’s Nations Cup IOC President Thomas Bach amongst winners at FIH Honorary Awards in New Delhi France create shockwaves on Day 9 of Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018

The male and female team of South Africa beat host Egypt and Ghana in their respective finals to win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ismalia, Egypt earlier today. With the South Africa women already booking a place in next year’s Hockey Women’s World Cup in London after an impressive performance from the Hockey World League Semi-Finals, the men guaranteed their qualification for the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 in India after their victory over Egypt. South Africa stayed undefeated in the competition in both categories. The men won three games and played a draw with Egypt in the pool games with the women winning all games. After beating Ghana 3–0 a day before in a match tagged ‘a final before the final’, South Africa were eager to do the double. Ranked 13th in the FIH Hero World Rankings, South Africa played their usual attacking game but Ghana’s defence stood out until the 19th minute when Davids Illse broke the deadlock to put South Africa in front. Lillian du Plessis increased the tally from a penalty corner just before half-time to put her team 2 goals up. Tarryn Glasby put the Champions in a comfortable 3-0 lead with a well-taken goal in the 29th minute before scoring again in the 47th minute to register her brace and South Africa’s fourth. Dirkie Chamberlain, who didn’t score in the final, emerged tournament top scorer with eight goals. South Africa’s win at the Suez Canal Authority Hockey Stadium earlier today meant they have won the last seven Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Ghana’s female Black Sticks (World Ranking 32) picked up silver to also make it five in a row since 2005. Nigeria’s female team (WR:62) after beating highly ranked opponents, Kenya (WR:42) on shoot-out, went home with the bronze medal. The match produced six goals within regulation time. Okumu (24th min), Vodoti (39th min) and Karanja (52nd min) scored for Kenya with Uwuoezi (20th min), Ovo (44th min) and Johnson (46th min) getting the Goals for Nigeria to make it 3-3. Goals from Beauty Irame and Eleho Ovo during the shoot-out meant Nigeria beat Kenya. The men’s final was a close-fought contest between Egypt and South Africa. In an earlier encounter in this competition, Egypt (WR:19) held South Africa (WR:15) to a 3-3 draw and were very optimistic of beating their southern rivals this time around. For South Africa men, this was an opportunity to win their eighth consecutive title at this event. Egypt started on a bright note when Ahmed Elganaini put them ahead in the 8th minute but Taine Paton restored parity for South Africa in the 39th minute. The game was approaching a shoot-out until Jethro Eustice drove home a penalty corner in the 48th minute to silence the entire stadium. The last 2 minutes saw Egypt throw everything at South Africa but in the end, the champions prevailed and will be on their way to India next year while Egypt will be disappointed for not making it to Bhubaneswar. Ghana (WR: 36) engaged Kenya (WR: 37) in the bronze medal match of the men’s category. A high scoring match saw Ghana beat their close rivals by 5-3 to win the bronze medal for the fourth time after missing out in 2013 and 2015. Constant Wakhura put the Kenyans ahead in the 17th minute. Ghana who had beaten Kenya 3-0 in a pool game earlier, came alive and scored five goals, with Francis Tettey, a brace from Elikem Akaba, Luke Damalie and Emmanual Ankomah all getting on the score sheet. Festus Onyango and Kennedy Munialo scored a goal each to reduce the deficit for the Kenyans but it was too late at the blast of the final whistle. All over Africa, expectations and predictions have gone wild as we await the final matches of the Africa Cup of Nations 2017 today, 29th October, 2017. The men’s team of Egypt shall lock horns with the defending champions and Africa’s highest ranked team, South Africa. In the women’s category, South Africa will face Ghana who are second to them in the Africa ranking. Egypt are 19th in the FIH team ranking and 2nd in Africa while South Africa are placed 15th position in the world and 1st on the African continent. Clearly, it could be argued openly that South Africa with a higher rank, stand a greater chance and more likely to win but it should be noted worthily of their recent encounters and how each team fared. In the last Africa Cup of nations held in South Africa in 2015, Egypt lost closely to South Africa even after taking the lead. The Champions punished Egypt and claimed the title on home soil after a very tensed game. Moving forward, these two Africa giants met in the Semi-Finals of the World League Series in Johannesburg where the Egyptians held the South Africans to the ground in a 2-1 scoreline. However both teams have had the greatest exposure among teams in Africa and could make up a surprising scoreline wherever they meet. Coming into the ongoing tournament being staged here in Ismailia, these teams drew 3-3 in their encounter and this sends a message across that anything at all should be expected in the final. Aside the trophy, Africa’s sole ticket to the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018 is also as stake. In a wild guess, some fans add home support to the odds of winning a game of hockey, but could this really bring forth results? Ghana’s female team lost to South Africa 3-0 earlier in the tournament and are yet to meet again in the final. Ghana has never won against South Africa in the women’s category as far as the last decade. A review of the 2015 final saw South Africa beat the Black Sticks by 3-0 to clinch their 6th title. Ghana are second to South Africa on the continent while Ghana is 32nd in the FIH World ranking, with South Africa placing 13th. With South Africa booking a ticket after qualifying through the Hockey World League in Johannesburg, the pressure is on Ghana as they seek to qualify for their first ever world cup. Maybe it could be clearly predicted of the winner but can Ghana pull a surprise, or South Africa will go on to make it 7 out of 7. Ghana will take on Kenya for the bronze medal in the men’s category while Nigeria will face Kenya in the women category. The final round of matches at the on going Africa Cup of Nations took place today 28th October, 2017 as defending champions South Africa defeated Ghana in the final before the final while Kenya beat Host Egypt to set up a bronze medal match with Nigeria. Ghana’s female Black Sticks faced South Africa in the first match of the day. With both teams securing a place in the final, it was a match to decide who emerges group winners. Cells Evans put the Champions in front from a penalty corner in the 3rd minute to put pressure on the West African lads. The Black Sticks of Ghana conceded another goal in the 7th minute through Davids Illse who coincidentally was wearing the jersey number 7. The first quarter ended 2-0 in South Africa’s favour. O’Connor Jessica increased the tally 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter to take the game beyond the reach of Ghana. The 3rd and final quarter produced no goal as both teams played with caution to reserve the best for the final tomorrow. South Africa won the game by 3-0 to top the group. Kenya played Egypt in the women’s second game of the day and final game of the group. Host Egypt lost their 3rd game of the tournament to miss out on the bronze medal match. After two consecutive heavy losses to Ghana and South Africa, the Host came in strong to earn a point and secure a spot in the 3rd place match. The defence of both teams looked solid as the match travelled the first 3 quarters barren. Kenya’s Nekesa Juma stepped up to convert a penalty corner in the 47th minute to put the Suez Canal Authority Hockey Stadium in a moment of silence. The host fought back to equalise but their efforts proved futile as team Kenya went on to win the match by a lone goal. South Africa finished as group winners with Ghana coming in 2nd to set up a final match with the champions. Can they redeem themselves or it will be 7 titles in a row for South Africa? A repeat of the 2015 final was confirmed in the last round of group matches for the men. South Africa thrashed Kenya in the first match while Egypt humbled Ghana to secure a place in the final. The final showdown will be a record 8th time the top two ranked teams will meet. Defending Champions, South Africa made it to their 8th consecutive final of the Africa cup of nations with a win over Kenya in the men’s first game of the day. The champions who were held by Egypt on Thursday, came in strong to win and book a place in the final . Eustice Jethro (South Africa) opened the gates with his first goal of the tournament in the 18th minute. The tally was doubled a minute later by Rosenburg Reza but Wakhura Constant gave a quick reply to reduce the deficit for Kenya in the 19th minute. The goal rejuvenated the Kenyans to go all out and surprise the Champions but Horne Keenan dashed those hopes as he restored the two goal lead in the 34th minute before Daniel bell made it 4-1 in the 37th minute from a penalty corner. Robinson Jonathan made it 5 for the champions in the 46th minute from another penalty corner before Horne grabbed his brace in the 48th minute to make it 6-1 in favour of South Africa. In the men’s final group game, it was Ghana’s black sticks with the aim of bringing an end to the South Africa-Egypt final dominance who came up against host Egypt. Egypt led the group with 7 points while Ghana were 3rd with 6 points hence a win for either sides will secure a place in the final with South Africa. Both teams knowing this, came in tactically disciplined and this was evident in the first and second quarters as it ended barren. Atef Hamada broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute and added another in the 38th minute both from a penalty corner to make it 2-0 in favor of Egypt. Zaki Mohammed made it 3 in the 46th minute with El-Ganaini Ahmed rounding up a perfect victory from another penalty corner in the 51st minute. Egypt won the game by 4-0. The very obvious final comes into being as South Africa makes a date with Egypt on Sunday 29th October, 2017 while Ghana also face Kenya earlier in the 3rd place match which is also becoming a familiar fixture. Match 7 in the men’s category of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ismaila, Egypt was one of the toughest games in the competition so far. The Egyptians locked horns with the defending champions, South Africa in a fierce encounter at 15:00 on 26th October, 2017. The match which featured the first and second ranked men hockey teams in Africa, drew a lot of fans around Ismailia to the Suez Canal Hockey Stadium. The first quarter of the match offered few chances to both sides but neither of them able to register a goal. The first goal came in the 23rd minute from Paton Taine to put South Africa in the lead. The Egyptians who tried to restore parity, found the ball in their post again 5 minutes later through Ntuli Nqobile. The Champions who had taken a comfortable lead and a foot in the final on sunday, were caught off guard when the host took an advantage of a penalty stroke to reduce the tally. The first half ended 2-1 in favour of South Africa. Egypt came back strong in the 3rd quarter and levelled the game through Ahmed Gamal in the 35th minute. ElGanainy Ahmed scored in the 41st minute to put the host in front for the first time in the game. South Africa’s skipper Tim Drummond who is determined in lifting this year’s trophy, brought the Champions back into the game in the 48th minute. With the match tied at 3-3, the final minutes of the game gave rise to tension around the stadium as the winner of this game had a higher chance of playing in Sunday’s final. The game ended 3-3 with both teams staying top of the table with 7 points and a game each to play. Team Nigeria who had lost their earlier 3 matches in this competition, took on the Blacksticks of Ghana in the last match of the day. The Nigerians surprisingly took the lead in the first 10 minutes of the 1st quarter through Fowobaje Oluwatosin. That proved to be their only goal as the Black Sticks came back very strong in the 2nd quarter and beyond. The Africa Cup of nations commenced gracefully today in Ismalia. The men’s category which had three matches fixed earlier, saw just two(2) after Zambia officially wrote to withdraw from the event. The first match of the day was between the Black sticks of Ghana and their counterparts from Kenya. The pre-match predictions by fans across the continent purported that it was going to end in a close scoreline if not a draw. The last meeting of these teams was at the World Hockey League Round one series staged in Accra last year and Ghana won that game with a lone goal. The game started with a balanced press in the first 7 minutes of the game. Akuamoah Micheal put the Ghanaians in front in the 8th minute. Team Ghana outplayed the Kenya’s after going up and through to the 2nd quarter. Damalie Luke increased the tally in the 2nd quarter through a beautifully converted penalty corner. Team Kenya created chances but failed to score as they ended the quarter down by 2 goals. Elikem Akaba deepened their woes by scoring Ghana’s 3rd in the third quarter. The defence of Kenya couldn’t afford to let in a 4th goal as well as their attack also not able to convert the few chances they created hence keeping the scoreline 3-0 in favour of Ghana. In the 2nd game, Nigeria Men’s team suffered a 13-1 defeat at the hands of host nation Egypt. The Egyptians who are a more experience and better side after their participation in the World Hockey League Semi final took their counterparts by ease scoring 13 goals across 4 quarters with the Nigerians grabbing a consolation. The Egyptians who are poised in winning the ultimate left no stone unturned in their 1st game. Egypt with their massive day 1 win sit top of the men’s table. Ghana follow in 2nd while Kenya and Nigeria follow in 3rd and 4th place respectively. South Africa who had their game cancelled with Zambia lie bottom. By: DENNIS ABABIO JNR.
