1 November 2021 Pool A: Will Belgium’s junior Red Lions emulate their all-conquering senior side? Lausanne, Switzerland: As part of our build-up to the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Bhubaneswar 2021, we bring you the first of four Pool previews which examines the qualification routes and past form of the teams that will compete at the showpiece event in India. Belgium, Chile, Malaysia and South Africa all feature in Pool A, with a top two finish being the only way to secure a place in the competition quarter-finals and thus maintain hopes of Junior World Cup glory. Belgium How they qualified: 5th Place – EuroHockey Junior Championship Men 2019 Junior World Cup history: 2016 – 2nd, 2013 – 6th, 2009 – 11th, 2005 – 11th, 1997 – 12th, 1985 – 11th About the team: Following their silver medal at the 2016 Men’s Junior World Cup competition in Lucknow, India – Belgium’s greatest performance in the competition – the Junior Red Lions will be determined to go one place better this time around. A far from perfect fifth place finish at the 2019 EuroHockey Junior Championship in Valencia, Spain was enough for Belgium to book their ticket to Bhubaneswar, the Indian city where their senior team created history by winning the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup in 2018. With the senior men’s team now also the Olympic champions, this next generation of Belgian hockey could well feel suitably inspired to make their mark. Chile How they qualified: 1st Place: 2021 Men’s Junior Pan American Championship Junior World Cup history: 2009 – 17th, 2005 – 15th, 2001 – 15th, 1985 – 14th, 1979 – 12th About the team: Chile created a little bit of history at the 2021 Men’s Junior Pan American Championship, which was played in August on home in Santiago. The team became junior continental champions for the very first time, defeating defending champions Argentina – who had won all 11 previous editions of the competition – in the final thanks to a drama-filled shoot-out after the title match finished with the scores locked at 1-1. It was a landmark moment for the young team, inspired by the goal-scoring exploits of Andrés Pizarro, who netted seven times to finish at the tournament’s top scorer as Chile qualified for the Junior World Cup for the first time since 2009. As the Junior Pan American champions, Chile have every reason to feel confident about their chances of success in Bhubaneswar. Malaysia How they qualified: Nominated by Asian Hockey Federation Junior World Cup history: 2016 – 11th, 2013 – 4th, 2009 – 12th, 2005 – 10th, 2001 – 12th, 1993 – 11th, 1989 – 6th, 1985 – 10th, 1982 – 4th, 1979 – 4th About the team: Malaysia – who will host the 2023 edition of this event – have competed in all but one of the 11 FIH Men’s Junior World Cup tournaments staged to date, with their performances being a very mixed bag. On three occasions they just missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in 1979, 1982 and 2013, but have also endured some difficult campaigns where they have finished towards the bottom of the standings. With flair players aplenty, they can hurt any team in the world and are not to be under-estimated. Malaysia’s place in the competition was confirmed by being nominated by the Asian Hockey Federation following the unfortunate COVID-19 related cancellation of the 2021 Junior Asia Cup, which acted as the qualification competition for the Junior World Cup in Bhubaneswar. South Africa How they qualified: Nominated by African Hockey Federation Junior World Cup history: 2016 – 10th, 2013 – 12th, 2009 – 15th, 2005 – 13th, 2001 – 11th About the team: Like Egypt, South Africa’s Men’s Junior World Cup ticket came courtesy of a nomination by the African Hockey Federation (AfHF). Following the cancellation of the Junior Africa Cup 2021 in Namibia due to the ongoing COVID-19 global health pandemic, AfHF based their selection on the results of the 2016 Junior Africa Cup, where South Africa finished in second place. They made their Junior World Cup debut at the Hobart 2001 (AUS) event and have competed in every subsequent competition, with their 10th place finish at Lucknow 2016 being their best to date. South Africa’s senior team turned heads at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 with some scintillating attacking performances. Can the juniors do the same? The opening match of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Bhubaneswar 2021 will see Belgium facing South Africa on 24 November at the Kalinga Stadium, the outstanding venue which hosted the last FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in 2018. The competition final will be played on 5 December. To see the complete match schedule, click here. ACCC 2016 Final Day – Defending Champions Retain Titles
On a day of excitement and under the watch of a packed stadium of fans and dignitaries, defending women’s champions Orange Club of Kenya and men’s champions Eastern Company Club of Egypt came out tops after 9 days of fantastic and competitive hockey. Orange proved their dominance in the women’s competition in recent years making it 5 championships in a row with victory over old campaigners GRA (formerly known as CEPS) of Ghana. The match was fiercely contested but it was the Kenyans who had the extra edge tactically, technically and physically to claim the spoils with a 2-0 win. Orange made sure of a record 10 championships out of 20 since the inception of the women’s competition in 1996. GRA, who boast of a good number of the Ghana National Women’s hockey team, put up a spirited fight but that was not enough to overcome the strength, speed and agility of the Orange ladies. The Bronze medal match was won by Kada Queens of Nigeria who fought back from 2 goals down to beat compatriots and former champions Heartlands 4-2. Ghana Police Women placed 5th beating Sharkia 6-2, while Sliders of Kenya came in 7th after Sharkia of Egypt beating Wananchi of Uganda 3-0. Dar Ladies of Tanzania condemned Weatherhead of Uganda to the bottom of the placings beating them 1-0 to place 9th. In the men’s competition, looked to have started a new dynasty taking over from compatriots Sharkia with the successful defence of their title. When many thought the Egyptian dominance of the 28 year old competition was about to be broken due to losses inflicted on both Sharkia and Eastern in the Group stages, Eastern picked themselves up to pull through to the semi-finals. Again, when the thronging fans and media pundits thought the much fancied homesters Butali Warriors were going to finally push the Egyptian opposite aside, Eastern held their own and dispatched the Warriors in a tense penalty shootout after 70 minutes of thrilling hockey which ended in a 2-2 stalemate. Eastern Company needed to overcome another Kenyan opposition to retain their title after Kenya Police saw off Ghana Police in the clash of the Policemen. The Kenyan Police made light work of their Ghanaian opponents brushing them aside with a 4-1 victory. The stage was thus set for an exciting men’s final and in front of a packed and cheering stadium, the match lived up to its billing. After 70 minutes of a thrilling encounter which ended goalless, the shootout was to determine the champions. Eastern missed one attempt at goal and lead 3-2 at the 4th shoot out for both teams. Police however failed to convert their 5th and final shootout when Eastern goalie pulled of a save. Eastern celebrated to the disappointment of the packed stadium of hopeful Kenyan fans. Butali Warriors put in a good effort to soothe the pain of the home fans by winning the bronze, beating debutants Ghana Police 3-0. Record championship winners Sharkia, finished the competition in a very unfamiliar distant 5th position beating Exchequers 3-2 in a tight contest. Niger Flickers of Nigeria came in 7th beating Weatherhead of Uganda 8-0 in the classification match. Wananchi of Uganda placed 9th and bottom of the classifications. For many who have followed the ACCC over the years, they believe the level of hockey exhibited points to the beginning of a new era where the dominance of Sharkia ends and others take over. The thrills of the competition brought to the fore that although Eastern retained their crown, it was achieved against a very tight opposition which resulted in a one game loss during the Group stages. Some individual awards were handed out to outstanding performers courtesy of sponsors Hockey Farm of Ghana and Kenya. In the women’s competition, Aya Mahmoud of Sharkia Ladies won the best goalie after she stood solid for a very improved Sharkia team. The top scorer was jointly won by Elizabeth Opoku of GRA Ghana and Wangechi Mwangi Jaqueline of Orange Kenya with 9 goals each. In the men’s competition, Shehata Elrazek Farahat of Eastern won the best goalie while Emmanuel Ankomah of Exchequers of Ghana won the top scorer with 8 goals to his credit.

ACCC 2016 Match Day 7 – Orange Kenya and GRA Ghana in Women’s Finals
Defending champions Orange made a big splash into the women’s finals with a sound 7-0 thrashing of former champions Heartlands of Nigeria. Orange dominated all aspects of the game from the blowing of the starting whistle to the sound of the ending hooter. The well-oiled Orange machinery, combining a good mix of youthful agility and strategic experience of players, played constructive hockey for 70 minutes. Heartlands were no pushovers, but they simply did not have an antidote to the fast passing game of the Kenyans who look good to retain their title. Heartlands will face compatriots Kada Queens to determine who puts the Bronze Medals around their necks on the flight back home. GRA of Ghana, bounced back from their late deflation in their previous match to another Nigerian side, to notch a 1-0 victory over Kada Queens. The match failed to provide the excitement the thronging fans had anticipated but the result was satisfying for the visibly exhausted GRA Ladies who have a day of rest before the final match on Sunday. The finalist in the men’s competition will be determined tomorrow in what is anticipated to be a busy schedule. Before then, Sharkia and Ghana Police will battle for 4th and 5th place in the women’s competition while Exchequers will seek to get back at a visibly wounded Sharkia team in the men’s classification match for 4th and 5th positions. It then gets more interesting later in the afternoon as Butali Warriors of Kenya ‘pick their spears’ to do battle with the defending champions Eastern Company of Egypt in what promises to be fierce contest. After that, in the coolness of nightfall, comes the clash of the Policemen from Kenya and Ghana with the anticipation of fireworks that will light up the skies above the City Park area. Both clubs have played some really good hockey and set the stage for a mouthwatering encounter that the loyal fans should not miss.
Shocks and Thrills on Day 4 as Defending Champions are Beaten
In one of the two top liners of the Day 4 in the men’s competition, Kenya Police inflicted a painful 2-1 defeat on defending champions Eastern Company of Egypt. The defeat signaled the determination of other clubs to break the Egyptian dominance in the competition. Eastern were visibly stunned by the result as they stood on the turf in disbelief after the final whistle. In the second top liner, another set of Policemen from Ghana arrested the ambitions of dominant Sharkia with a sleek 1-0 victory. The Ghanaians fought the Egyptians in all compartments of the game signaling yet again the determination of other clubs to knock the Egyptians off their perch. The other men’s match between Wananchi and Weatherhead produced 7 goals with the latter running away with a 4-3 win. In the women’s encounter, homesters and favourites, Orange, dismissed Weatherhead 9-0 in a one sided match. Wananchi made sure they dispatched Dar Ladies 2-1, while contenders, Ghana Police and Heartlands of Nigeria shared the spoils in a pulsating 2-2 draw. Day 5 in the men’s competition will see some fireworks as Eastern Company will seek to get their ambitions back on track with a win over Exchequers of Bank of Ghana. The Bankers will not be pushovers and it promises to be an exciting encounter. In the women’s competition, the two Ghanaian clubs square off in a battle to keep their championship chances alive.
Eastern Company Hockey Club off to a Blistering Start
Defending Champions Eastern Company Club of Egypt set the Nairobi City Park Hockey Stadium alight with a crisp display of hockey and a 14-0 thumping of Weatherhead of Uganda. The defending Champions were ruthless from the start of the match and though this was not a major test, they looked strong to defend their crown. In the other men’s match, Niger Flicker of Nigeria succumbed to the force of Ghana Police bowing 2-5. The women’s competition saw defending champions Orange making light work of Kada Queens of Nigeria beating them 5-2. Heartland of Nigeria beat Dar Ladies of Tanzania 2-0 while Ghana Police commenced their search for a first title with a 6-0 thrashing of Wananchi of Uganda. Sharkia women showed how much they have developed over time wresting Sliders of a Kenya to a pulsating 2-2 drawn game. Day 3 will see some interesting matches with an anticipation of a lot of fireworks.
